Who has to pay CPP contributions

Everyone in Canada between age 18 and 70 has to pay into Canada Pension Plan (CPP) (QPP in Quebec) on pensionable earnings. You and your employer each pay half of the contributions. If you are self-employed, you pay both portions.

You start paying into CPP in the month after you turn 18. You stop paying into CPP after the month you turn 70.

You don’t have to contribute into CPP if are disable under the CPP.

If you are a CPP working beneficiary, you can elect to stop paying CPP.
