What is national child benefit supplement (NCBS)?

The national child benefit supplement (NCBS) is included in the Canada child tax benefit (CCTB) and paid monthly to low-income families with children under 18 years of age.

The NCBS amounts for July 2015 to June 2016 are:

  • $2,279.92 ($189.91 per month) for the first child
  • $2,016.00 ($168.00 per month) for the second child; and
  • $1,917.96 ($159.83 per month) for each additional child

If you income is higher than $26,021, the NCBS will be reduced. The reduction is calculated as follows:

If you are on social assistance, the NCBS may affect the amount of your social assistance payments. Many provinces and territories will consider the NCBS you get as income and will adjust your basic social assistance by this amount.
